How to Evaluate a Ladder Manufacturer Before an OEM Order

Table of Contents

An OEM inquiry that says only “telescopic tent ladder” gives a factory little to price. I would send the selected size, mounting point, current drawing and revision, parts to include, destination and packing method. Otherwise one quote may cover a ladder with its fittings while another covers the ladder alone. The numbers will look comparable until the samples arrive.

Put the quotation, sample tag and packing list on the same desk. If they name different sizes or revisions, there is no agreed build yet. It is much easier to settle that before sample approval than after cartons have been made.

How to Evaluate a Ladder Manufacturer Before an OEM Order

Describe the job the ladder must do

First describe where the ladder goes and what it meets. A rooftop tent attachment is a different starting point from warehouse access or maintenance work. The buyer needs the required height, mounting location and mating part, plus the market where the ladder will be used. Those answers go on the drawing and the RFQ.

For a tent, bring the mating attachment into the sample check. A photo of a hook-style telescopic tent ladder does not show whether its hook sits correctly on this tent. The one-button telescopic tent ladder is offered in 2.0 m, 2.3 m and 2.6 m options. If the order is for 2.3 m, put 2.3 m on the drawing, sample tag and quotation. A family name cannot make that selection for the factory.

Jadduo also lists multi-button, hook, one-button and 2X4 extension designs. Name the 2X4 extension telescopic tent ladder when that is the requested version. Then give its size and mounting point separately; the model label is not a dimensioned interface drawing.

For workplace ladders, product selection and site rules both matter. The UK’s HSE has guidance on selecting ladder types, and U.S. buyers can read OSHA’s general industry ladder requirements. Neither reference tells a supplier which model or attachment this PO covers. State the market and product requirements in the inquiry.

Send an RFQ that suppliers can price consistently

An RFQ should allow the same ladder to be priced by two factories. Made the model or drawing revision, size, tube profile steps joints locks foot and attachments: Ensure the fittings along with a manual and carton contents, number of items in it; where you want to send them item inspection records expected. Excluding those introduces different assumptions between the two prices. Omitting those allows very different assumptions to enter into the two prices.

Even a short email can be specific: “One-button tent ladder, 2.3 m. Quote the attachment, carton contents and inspection record.” Attach the drawing for dimensions and connection points. An email description is useful for scope, but the drawing controls the interface.

If a feature is undecided, give both bidders the same choices. You will not compare a 2.3 m unit with another that is a 2.6m or, say, an estimate without fittings against one that has them fitted The discrepancy could be buried in a one-line packing note. This discrepancy may be nestled in a one-liner packing note.

RFQ item Put this in the request Why it matters
Model definition Drawing, revision, size, parts list Establishes what is being priced
Quantity and destination Order volume and delivery location Shapes packing and freight scope
Sample Unit identification and approval record Connects approval to the production build
Inspection Required features, stage, and record Makes quality requests specific
Packing Manual, fittings, carton, labels, count Prevents omitted delivery items

Check what they exclude alongside the unit cost. Inquire about Sample charges, Minimum Order quantity, packaging details, delivery term and the event triggering production lead time. The contract refers to ‘six weeks’ which may begin from deposit, sign off of drawdown or sample approval. Insert the agreed trigger as a quote and then use that in your own timetable, exactly when you want to include this date..

Keep the specification with the purchase order

The PO says how many units, at what price and delivery scope; the drawing says what gets built. Both need the same model and revision. If sample review changes a lock or an attachment, amend the drawing and PO. A note on a photograph is not a production instruction.

Approve a sample that production can repeat

Add the model, size and revision of the drawing in a tag on this Sample before anyone pass on it by signature. If each of these deviations from the layout cause the buyer to accept. A catalog unit, a modified prototype and production-intent sample might all appear almost identical in one photo; their tags and change notes have to distinguish them.

Confirm that fit dimensions agree with the parts list and then move the telescopic sections as specified in instructions If it connects to another product, put the two pieces together. This is one case multi-button telescopic tent ladder, the mating point belongs in the sample check assistance not after delivery complain.

Take sample differences one by one. Accepting a new lock does not mean accepting a different fitting. Name both decisions, change the controlled drawing where necessary and identify the approved version. “Approved with changes” is too vague for the assembly line.

Ask how the quoted model will be produced

Ask for the traveler or work sequence for the quoted model, and a blank or redacted inspection form. The traveler connects the drawing revision with this ladder’s operations. A list of machines only tells you what the factory could do, not what it plans to do on your order.

Tube profile changes the route. Jadduo describes round pipe being drilled, sometimes indented or stamped, then sleeved; square pipe is drilled and fitted with plastic sleeves. Have the factory mark which steps apply to the quoted ladder and how parts remain identified between stations.

Read the inspection plan as an order document

The inspection plan should say what feature is checked, at which station, by what method or limit, and where the result is written. A hole can be measured before assembly. A lock has to be operated after it is installed. Final inspection sees the complete ladder, but it cannot recover a missing measurement on a feature now hidden inside a joint.

Ask how a finished ladder can be traced back to its model, drawing revision, PO and inspection results. Another customer’s completed report may be confidential. A blank or redacted form is enough to show whether those fields exist and follow the work.

Match each test document to the quoted configuration

A certificate title by itself is a poor shortcut. If a product or destination needs a report, look for the tested model, size, material, components, standard, issuing body and configuration. A test on one attachment or length does not automatically cover another. Put the report request against the precise RFQ version.

Compare the delivered order, not just the unit price

The price comparison starts with what is in each carton. A manual or fitting kit may be in one offer and absent from another. Put the ladder, fittings, labels, instructions, carton count and inspection record on separate lines, then add sample fees, minimum quantity and delivery terms. The unit price is useful only after that list matches.

The 2.3 m and 2.6 m versions are different purchases. Choose one size for the comparison sheet and make both factories quote its attachment, inspection and packing. A shared family name does not make the other dimensions disappear.

A lead time needs a starting event. Write “after deposit,” “after drawing approval” or “after final sample approval” as agreed, rather than keeping only a number of weeks. When the drawing is revised late, get the new milestone recorded. That saves the warehouse and supplier from planning to different dates.

Under the ISPM standards of International Plant Protection Convention, solid wood in an export carton has to undergo checks for destination and route separately. Regulated wood packaging and plant products Not all ordinary cardboard and plastic protection have the same rule. Non-special cardboard and plastic protective cover, on the other hand does not automatically follow a similar regulation.

Agree who can approve a change

Decide who signs technical changes before the first one arrives. Sales may pass on a proposal, but someone named in the order must accept a new dimension, material, lock, fitting, label or packing method. For a failed inspection, write down the model, affected quantity and disposition. Held, reworked, replaced and accepted-under-deviation units cannot share an ambiguous status.

A deviation is not a quiet drawing update. It records exactly what differs, which batch or PO it covers and who accepted it. The next order should not inherit that exception unless the buyer changes the controlled baseline.

The drawing revision, approved sample and PO are the three references for the build. If a component is substituted, the change note should identify the model, old and new part, reason, order and approver. State whether the exception ends with this shipment or moves into the next revision.

Lay the sample next to the drawing, quote, inspection plan and packing sheet before PO release. Do their revision codes agree? Trace one feature to the recorded check that will verify it. If the supplier cannot show that path, the point remains open. The HSE’s condition inspection advice for ladders and pre-use ladder checks concern ladders already in service and cannot sign off factory production. About us and Jadduo provide company background; Contact us is the place to send the selected model, size, revision, destination and quantity.

What should a ladder manufacturer provide for an OEM order?

For an OEM order, I would expect the current drawing, model code, quotation, tagged sample approval, inspection plan and packing scope. Any certificate or test report requested for the destination needs to identify the actual ladder configuration, not only a similar family name.

Should a buyer approve a sample before production?

Yes, for the version being bought. The tag should show model, size and revision. Compare it with the drawing and operate its moving parts. Record each difference the buyer accepts and put those decisions into the build instruction.

How can two ladder manufacturers be compared fairly?

Use one drawing and one packing and inspection request for both manufacturers, along with the same quantity and destination. Record what each quote includes. Then the totals can be compared without one factory’s missing fittings masquerading as a lower price.
